Food waste accounts for 30% of municipal solid waste in Hong Kong and is a major source of carbon emissions when landfilled. One corporate is partnering with a social enterprise to upcycle its food waste into compost to provide nutrients for its urban rooftop farm.

DBS Bank has recently partnered with Taikoo Place and social enterprise Rooftop Republic to raise awareness of food sustainability by turning the rooftop of One Island East into an urban farm. Not only that, but the partnership will also kick-start a food waste collection process to turn leftovers at the bank's office into compost, which will then be used as natural fertilisers for the soil at the urban farm, where more than 30 types of seasonal crops are grown. The first harvest, reaped in September, was donated to the food bank, Feeding Hong Kong.
