Samsung Wants Your Old Headsets to Promote Circularity
Global temperatures are rising, and we can all feel the heat. To combat climate change, circular economy approaches are key - the idea is to facilitate the reuse and ucycling of valuable resources, with the aim of decreasing the carbon emissions from energy consumption and transportation of virgin resources.
Multi-sectoral cooperation is needed for circular economic models to yield fruits, and many comanpanies are already incorporating the circular economic priniciples in their business model. For example, Samsung has announced that it will commit towards generating zero waste to landfill by 2025, not least by improving its product lifecycle design and implement new circular upcycling, refurbishing and recycling programmes. Some of the programmes include “Galaxy Upcycling”, which will turn old Samsung phones into smart home devices; Certified Re-Newed, which is an option for customers to buy secondhand phones that have been repaired to almost-new quality. Samsung is also looking to launch a trade-in campaign to encourage customers to hand in their worn-out devices in return for credit, so the firm can either recycle, refurbish, or repurpose the product again.
