When Aviation Takes Carbon-neutrality Seriously
With increase in vaccination rates, overseas travel is expected to resume. But how can tourism be used as a tool to promote sustainable development to safeguard us against climate change?
Some major players in the aviation industry are taking the lead to set carbon-neutrality goals. Cathay Pacific, for instance, pledges to reach carbon-neutrality by 2050, by investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to offset its carbon emissions, and reduce engine use on the ground. British firm Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), on the other hand, is expecting to launch its low-carbon hybrid plane, with a capacity for 100 passengers, to take off by 2025.
In response to rising demands for sustainable aviation, the world's two major airplane manufacturers are eager to hop on the carbon-neutral bandwagon: Boeing has committed to running all its planes on fuels developed by vegetable oil, non-recyclable waste, and other sources by 2030; while Airbus is expecting to launch its carbon-neutral commercial flights by 2035.
